Saratoga marked the turning point of the war. It’s where the underdog colonies showed they had what it took to go toe-to-toe with the British and possibly even win. This victory was enough to convince the French it was time to join the fight and back the scrappy American colonies against their old rival. Enter Arnold, whose daring decisions on the battlefield that day were pivotal. Yet, in a twist of fate, during the climax of the battle, Arnold’s leg would be shattered in four places, setting off a downward spiral of events that would forever alter his standing in American history. The term “one boot” is a symbolic reference to Arnold’s role at the Battle of Saratoga. The monument at the Saratoga Battlefield, features a boot to represent the leg injury Arnold suffered that day, further exemplifying how crucial of a role Arnold played in the Colonial victory. Due to his later act of treason, Arnold’s name is omitted from the monument.
